2009-09-12: U2 in Chicago

View Category We left for Chicago yesterday morning and returned this afternoon, for another pilgrimage to see U2.  It was a great show as always, but I’m still of a mind that their best tours are the stripped down ones, like the Elevation tour, rather than this current one, which, like Pop Mart, threatens to dwarf or diminish the band with its huge, distracting, yet admittedly impressive stage.
My photos are available here and here’s a collection of clips off my Cyber-shot camera.

WJR Tigers March

View Category Yes, it’s well known the Internet Makes You Stupid®, but sometimes it can be your friend.  I was just reminiscing about an old sound from childhood when I realized I should see if I could find it online.  And lo and behold I could and did.  I had to do a little editing of the original MP3 I found, to get it the way I remembered it, so I figured I might as well share the final product here.
Here it is.  The march they used to play on WJR 760 AM before Detroit Tiger games.

Download the MP3 of it here.

Maestro Williams in Town

View Category I am very upset to find out today that famed film composer John Williams was in Detroit on Friday to conduct the DSO.  I can’t believe such an icon was in town and I knew nothing about it.  I’ve been belatedly reading up on the visit at JW Fan.net message boards.  I was very tempted to steal the photos and video clips and post them here.  But instead, I’ll just point the way to the best posting so far.

By the way…  Hey, AMPTP!  Get your heads out of your ass, play fair, give the writers what they deserve, and get my shows back on the air!  Why is that so damned difficult?!

Let Them Sing it for You

View Category View Category I saw this mentioned yesterday at Digg.com, but I can’t find the write-up on it anymore.  Regardless, it’s a Flash-based site where you can type in text and have it sung back to you.  Your lyrics will be performed by professional vocalists and performers—courtesy of hundreds of soundbyte samples.  It’s silly, but fun.  (There was one small disappointment however.  I was unable to pen any songs about cheese.)
The site is Let Them Sing it for You, and here’s a rendition of my own composition.

AFI’s Top 25 Movie Scores

View Category View Category From the AFI press release: "American Film Institute (AFI) revealed the top 25 film scores of all time in The Big Picture: AFI's 100 Years of Film Scores, a one-night only presentation produced by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association in cooperation with AFI.  A jury of over 500 film artists, composers, musicians, critics and historians selected John Williams' iconic score from the classic film STAR WARS as the most memorable film score of all time.  John Williams is additionally noteworthy as the most represented composer on the list with three scores making the top 25.
"[...] While television broadcasts have announced the previous eight installments of AFI's 100 Years... series, this event marks the first time an AFI countdown was revealed before a live audience."

This list is okay by me, I guess, although obviously it would have even more John Williams.  And Adventures of Robin Hood would be higher up.  Quibbles?  I can't say the On Golden Pond made any kind of impression on me, so I'm surprised to see it ranking so high.  And, now that I think of it, no Elmer Bernstein's Ten Commandments???
P.S.: want to hear some film music right now?  Check out Film Music Radio, streaming twenty-four hours a day.   (Plus there's the Soundtrack.net podcast at iTunes.)
