Lenten Fast Food Fish Sandwich Roundup

View Category I based the following review on unscientific research during the last week of Lent.  As usual in these matters, I limited the test to McDonald’s, Arby’s, Wendy’s, and Burger King.  Since there isn’t that great a difference in fast food fish sandwiches, there’s no real need for a regimented grading system.  Capsule reviews should suffice.
Wendy’s Fish Fillet: a round filet with crumbly breading.  A large leaf of lettuce.  Fish has decent flavor but breading turns kind of pasty.
Burger King Big Fish: square filet, sesame seed bun, shredded lettuce.  The lettuce makes this a dangerous car food.  Fish has a kind of “darker” flavor.  Mayonnaise is used instead of tartar sauce, eventually creating a rather tasteless mush.
Arby’s: I’m not even sure what their fish sandwich is called since the Arby’s I visited did not list the sandwich on their menu.  The sandwich deserves better.  A thick, triangular, flaky filet, on a sesame seed bun.  Special credit for an appealing touch of lemon flavor.  Again, the shredded lettuce makes this a tricky car food.  Recommended.
McDonald’s Filet o’Fish: an old favorite.  Probably the winner, beating Arby’s but only for sentimental reasons.  Square, flaky fish filet with nice light tartar sauce.  Two slices of cheese instead of lettuce.

Oscars 2001

View Category For the purposes of an April Fools joke, let’s pretend this is not an update.  I am still desperately fixated on creating a navigation menu bar for the site.  I was barely able to effect this before and have come a bit closer now, I think.  At least this one can be viewed in both IE and Netscape.
This previous week was so long it seems like a month since the last update (which is in fact true of my Jimmy Buffett page).  Last time, I was talking about the Oscars.  I very much enjoyed Steve Martin’s hosting, and I thought the show was pretty satisfactory.  I liked how the wealth was spread fairly well: I’m glad Steven Soderberg won (since being nominated twice in the same year would seem enough to make him the Best Director), but I still don’t see why Gladiator was deemed Best Picture.  But then again 2000 didn’t seem like that great a year in movies anyway.

Super Bowl

View Category Hey, see what I did?  If you’re using IE5.5, you might notice I made your scrollbar change [since removed]!  It’s a fairly harmless trick and I’ve seen it on other sites, so I of course needed to try it out here.  Thankfully it’s quite easy to effect (and has no long-lasting side effects).
In other news, Super Bowl Sunday is of course now upon us.  This is quite the special day for SFGs, as are most days based around beer and food.  Hope y’all have fun, and I hope you get the squares you want.

Christmas Wish List

View Category Christmas is fast approaching, as is Hanukkah. I’m proud to say I have almost all my shopping done, thanks to several online stores. I even found time to redecorate my homepage.
A happy and peaceful holiday season to you all, and my best wishes as we embark on the brave new 21st Century! I can’t wait for my jet-pack and my flying car.

Travels with Short Fat Guys

View Category Ahhh… the weekend…
I’ve gotten slightly re-energized with this web site over the last couple days.  I have no reason for it, so it’s best not to question it; but this sudden (and uncharacteristic) burst of energy has caused the creation of a few extra pages and the fleshing out of my Vacation (or “Travels”) section.
    Hope you like it.

While Sitting in the Wendy’s Drive-Thru

View CategoryThe Wendy’s Drive-Thru Query”: Why is it you always get your drink before your meal, but you only get your straw with your meal? So you get to sit there holding your cola, unable to do anything with it until the rest of your order arrives.
“The Wendy’s Drive-Thru Observation”: The possibility your diet Coke will be a regular Coke increases with the size of the drink.
