This Week in Food (2009-04-06)

View Category It’s MSNBC’s idea of “The 19 worst drive-thru foods in America”.
I always thought the worst drive-thru food meant it was the messiest and would get all over your shirt while driving.  But according to MSNBC it’s got to do with calories or something.  Go figure.

The Stomach Will Not Be Fooled!

View Category An interesting article at TIME.com:

[N]ew research suggests that the body is not so easily fooled, and that sugar substitutes are no key to weight loss — perhaps helping to explain why, despite a plethora of low-calorie food and drink, Americans are heavier than ever.

I’ve seen similar stories linking artificial sweeteners to weight gain; but what struck me about this article is that it involves testing animals.  It would be easy to explain why people who use artificial sweeteners can still gain weight—they could simply be rationalize they can eat more (I know I’ve done it)—but if tests on animals produce the same results, it suggests the problem is physical more than mental.  And this intrigues me a great deal.

But He’s Called Big Brother

View Category Some fat-haters in Mississippi want to see you starve.  Raw Story has the unbelievable report that “[a] bill recently introduced in Mississippi’s state legislature would bar restaurants from serving people determined to be obese.”
The state’s health department can even revoke permits of establishments that do not comply.  No word on how the determination of “obesity” would be made.  No word on if food establishments have to provide their own scales or have to perform BMI tests on potential customers.  No word on how any McDonald’s will stay open.  And no word on how punishing people who actually go out to restaurants is going to fix anything.
You might even file this as another sign of the great American police state we’re turning into, except no one has been wantonly tasered or forcibly strip searched ... yet.

Today in Food (2007/01/03)

View Category Happy New Year!
People have been asking me what my resolution is for the new year.  My answer?  1080p, baby.  1080p.
As is usual for the start of a new year, I’m planning on losing some weight.  One of the drawbacks of running a site about fatness is it’s almost like giving me license to a be a fat ass.  I’ve grown to monumental proportions over the last few months and I need to drop some pounds before I do structural damage to my house.  Also usual for this time, giving up food means I’m constantly thinking about food, and here a couple food-related links I found today.  (Both from Boing Boing.net.)
I was pretty proud of myself, in my youth, that I ate every single meal on the Bangkok Tiger menu.  But these guys are planning on eating at every single restaurant in Toronto, in the order in which the establishments are listed in the phone book.
And in case I’m considering making a meal of butter sticks, here’s what 200 calories looks like compared between different foods.
